Man, I feel sick.
Oh, not because of the 50,000 jobs that went under the knife today. At least not intitially - I’ve been battling a nagging cold since last Friday. I was all set to stay in bed and and watch TV. But a headline like this needed to be posted today.
After the lunar new year dinner celebration yesterday night, I was looking through the news online and saw that they said that people should be “prepared” for tomorrow’s business bloodbath. Sure enough, today at least six manufacturing and service industry companies (they listed Caterpillar, Sprint, Home Depot, ING, Pfizer and Deere & Co) announced major layoffs. They’re calling it Bloody Monday. The final tally should be more than 50,000 jobs lost in one day.
Of course, it’s no surprise that the cuts keep coming - this has been going on for awhile now. Chop, cut, slash. Still, I’m not so sure that now is a good time for studios to be releasing movies like Friday the 13th. I would think all the slashing is not going to sit well with the recently laid-off folks.
Update: Whoops, they revised the number upward to 68,000 jobs lost. Just another 18,000 people out of work…
Update: Sorry, final tally was 71,400 jobs lost. They kept adding to it throughout the day.
