Er, Can You Spare Some Eggs Ma’am?

August 7, 2008 by Bryan

Smiley Egg - Cheaplander.comHmm… I was going to get all funny in this post (to the tune of keeping all your eggs in other people’s baskets), but the sad truth is that it’s not so funny. I think news outlets eat this sort of story up and usually overhype it.

Still, as a sign of the drooping economy it’s poignant. Due to the cost of living, it seems that the number of women donating their eggs to infertility clinics in order for monetary compensation is on the rise.

Selling your eggs, while not a guaranteed road to riches (90% of potential donors are disqualified or rejected over an evaluation period of 30-40 days, before even starting the procedures), will bring in a handy five to ten thousand smackeroos. Some women have been donating multiple times once they’ve been given the green light as a donor. The process is long at six to eight weeks, and there are potential health risks.

I don’t know if this is going to be a new fad for folks looking for some financial security. But it sure brings new meaning to the phrase nest egg.
