Happy Thanksgiving and Uh, Gift Guides

November 27, 2008 by Bryan

OK, so in between running around trying to cook the sausage stuffing and mashed potatoes, I was attempting to work on a few script goodies here on Cheaplander. I was planning on creating a whole set of $10 or Less Gift Guides, but I was a little too optimistic. Hey, it’s Thanksgiving and I was in a good mood so I started working on it this morning.

Anyhow, I have the basic engine setup running now, but not too many gifts yet in it. Hopefully, it’ll be filled with goodies later on. A few notes: First, no, this is not an automatic script - I went through Amazon and looked for stuff on my own and then put them into the code. Jeebus, it takes forever - I didn’t use their automatic suggestion thingy, because I am STOOPID and just stubborn. Second, yep, I do get a little kickback if you buy a present through Amazon. It’s around 5% of the purchase price. Whoo. Hoo.

Here’s the current gift guide: Gift Ideas for Cooks under $10.

Happy Thanksgiving!

One thing that really irks me about Amazon is that they can’t ship household goods, food, electronics, or software abroad. Essentially, I can only buy DVDs, digital content, and books from them. I can buy anything from Amazon Japan, but they don’t have all the same stuff that the U.S. branch has and the America one is often cheaper (or, I prefer English versions/manuals!). Sigh.

I’ll be looking forward to your other guides though since I still can buy friends back home gifts from Amazon and have them sent to them.

@orchid - I think I’ve heard about the problems shipping to Japan before. There are some problems getting books printed in Japan to America as well, I know we couldn’t add them to cart sometimes. Kinda weird how they keep all the countries separate…

Hi Orchid64 - I have the same complaint about Amazon.jp!! I’m a huge fan of Japanese electronics and toys, specifically dolls - and Amazon.jp does not ship them to the US :( Of the items that they DO ship, they charge a lot for shipping that I end up ordering from somewhere else.
