Jobless Benefits Highest in Six Years

August 8, 2008 by Bryan

Ugh, the working peeps just can’t catch a break. In the latest news - claims for unemployment rocketed to the highest in nearly 6 years. That’s pretty crazy how the layoffs just continue to get worse. It’s times like these I’m glad I work at home. Still, having been laid off myself during the first dotcom meltdown, I can sympathize with the current job crunch.

New claims for unemployment insurance went up to 455,000 for the week ending August 2. However, it’s possible that some of the numbers were distorted by a new program that tries to help out folks who don’t know that they can get additional extended benefits for unemployment.

Man, with all the bad news, I can see more people deciding to scrimp and save a bit more - start being more of a Cheaplander. Maybe that’s a good thing for this site, but I guess I’d rather have less folks visiting and a better economy. =)
