Once again, the title of this post is a whole lot funnier than the situation some of these folks are in. Basically, it’s a hard choice between putting windmills on your farmland to raise a little cash (and for some, enable them to stay on their land) and blighting a traditionally rural landscape with the noisy eyesores.
It’s a tough nut, and one that speaks to the heart of the Cheaplander - how much do you compromise in order to stay afloat?
The area this story takes in is historical farmland in New York that has roots going back over a century for some of the farms - so it’s not like it’s new unused land that people are just plopping windmills onto. We see windmills all the time driving up toward San Fran from Los Angeles - but I don’t think those aren’t being put on lands traditionally used for cows and farming.
I dunno, it’s a difficult one to come down on either side - many of the families affected are split on the issue. I don’t know if I’d want a windmill sitting in my backyard just to generate five grand a year - but if it was a choice between moving and being able to stay, I might compromise.
